frieslandCharacteristics of Friesland

Friesland is characterised by lakes and by canals connecting them. It is famous for de Elfstedentocht, a skating route along eleven cities. You can follow more or less the same route as a signposted cycling route, 230 km long.

Friesland is a sparsely populated part of the country with wide horizons above green meadows, dotted with farms, cows and birds.
On a windy day it can be hard work to get around by bike.
Friesland knows a nice network of cycling routes.

Along the north coast of Friesland lies the Waddensea, a wetland area. At low tide you can make guided tours into the mud and even cross the wetland to one of the islands off the coast.

Of those islands we recommend Schiermonnikoog, as motorised traffic is prohibited on this island. General information about this province on the Frieslandsite.
